System Info

Some changes to the system-wide DNS has been made tonight. Browsing to 'www.wbus.net' or 'wbus.net' or 'www.whitebus.net' will redirect users to 'whitebus.net'. This basically means that wherever you go on the whitebus web pages, you will always have 'whitebus.net' as the beginning part of the address of the web page. This change has been made to standardize the naming convention on all whitebus pages due to the changing of whitebus' domain from 'wbus.net' to 'whitebus.net'.

As of today, FTP and telnet have been shut down permanently. Period. Don't worry though; whitebus members can still transfer files, chat, use pine, and do everything they did before, except now a program called Secure Shell will be used instead of telnet and FTP. Secure Shell is just like the old telnet and FTP that members used to use except that it's much better, both for the user and for the overall security of the system. Secure Shell does what telnet and FTP didn't, it encrypts everything that the user sends and receives. This is important because now, nobody on the Internet can read what you're typing or sending. Eliminating FTP and telnet has also left the system less vulnerable to attacks on the Internet.

Users can download a secure shell program from the whitebus website located here.

This page will soon get a makeover (hopefully). The plan is to incorporate a section for system updates and a section for proposed ideas. The system updates section will have everything you see here plus scheduled downtime. The proposed ideas section will contain ideas for improving whitebus. Included in this section will be a place for members to give their own ideas for whitebus and vote for what they like best.

Whitebus has gone through several large changes in over a months time. This is what's been done with the system over the last one and a half months:

1. System is no longer available at whitebus.2y.net. Instead, wbus.net is the new domain name.
2. A faster and more reliable Internet connection is used to connect Whitebus to the net.
3. A bandwidth restriction has been put on the web server to limit the amount of outgoing bandwidth to 8.1 Kb/s.
4. The web page has a new look. We hope that this new design will make it easier for people to navigate around.

Most of the web page has been assembled including the about section, system info, and help/FAQ. There is more to be added soon including support for forms. We urge comments and ideas to be sent to webmaster@whitebus.2y.net.

An alternative account/backup server has been set up at link.2y.net. This server is experimental and can be used if the main whitebus server is down. Users can connect to it like they would do normally on whitebus, although all users and their data might not be copied over.

The logs for all console games are writeable now. This means if you play a game from the command prompt, it can save your high scores instead of giving you a write error.

The unlimited login time has been fixed. Users WILL NOT get booted after 60 minutes of inactivity. This was due to a minor bug on my part. :-)

The IMAP server is now up and running. Users can access their mail using programs like Outlook Express and Netscape Mail. Make sure that the outgoing and incoming mail servers are both set to whitebus.2y.net, and that the server type is IMAP, not POP3. Users will use their regular username and password to log in.

Timeouts have been set to unlimited when logging in to the shell. This means no more getting logged out after 60 minutes of inactivity.

The whitebus time-up schedule has been changed. Whitebus will be online from 9:00am EST until 1:00am EST the next day. Down time is from 1:00am EST until 9:00am EST. This will make whitebus accessible on the Internet 16 hours each day. This change has been made to make it easier for users to connect to whitebus when they want to. The 16-hour per day up-time will not get reduced unless we run into problems with our ISP, Global2000.

All GPM machines except for tweety have been overhauled with Windows NT workstation. Daffy has been re-done with Redhat 6.2. It is online at whitebus.2y.net during various times of the day. Good luck to us getting under way this year. May the hardware never fail and the servers never need rebooting.
